Beyond the Standard: Elesa+Ganter's Special Screws for Unique Industrial Applications

By

In the vast world of fasteners, standard screws serve countless purposes. However, many special applications in machine and plant construction demand more than typical standards can offer. Whether it’s due to specific technical requirements or confined spaces, standard screw dimensions often fall short. Recognising this, Elesa+Ganter provides an extensive range of specialised  screw solutions designed to solve these unique challenges.

When Standard Screws Don’t Fit: The Elesa+Ganter Advantage

Engineers and designers frequently encounter situations where components need to be securely fastened yet easily detachable. But what happens when:

  • The screw head is too tall for the available clearance?
  • The standard head diameter is too large for a tight spot?
  • Countersinking isn’t a viable option?
  • Screws need to be captive to prevent loss?

Elesa+Ganter’s Machine Element Group offers a diverse portfolio of special screw classes specifically engineered to address these common problems effectively.

Specialised Screw Solutions for Specific Challenges

Let’s explore some of Elesa+Ganter’s innovative special screw solutions:

1. Screws for Tight Spaces: Reduced Head Diameters

For applications where the distance between a threaded bore or pass-through hole and the component edge is minimal, Elesa+Ganter offers GN 912.3 special screws. These feature a normal continuous thread but with a significantly reduced screw head diameter, allowing for secure fastening even in restricted locations.

Similarly, the socket cap screw GN 7984.3 combines both a small head diameter and a reduced head height, providing a compact solution for space-critical installations.

2. Ultra-Low Profile Fastening: Minimal Head Height Screws

When an extremely flat head is paramount and countersinking is not feasible, the GN 14580.5 screws are an excellent choice. These are ideal for compensating for tolerances in hole patterns. For instance:

  • The M6 thread version boasts a minimal head height of just 1.2 mm.
  • The M2 thread version has an incredibly low head height of only 0.5 mm.

While the tightening torque and load capacity are inherently reduced with such low profiles, these screws are perfect for simple fastening applications, such as securing thin metal plates or circuit boards.

3. Preventing Loss: Captive Screws for Safety and Compliance

Elesa+Ganter provides three types of special screws with clever anti-loss solutions. These screws feature a stud with a reduced core diameter located between the thread and the screw head.

How Captive Screws Work: Imagine attaching a cover:

  1. The screw is inserted through a thread in the cover.
  2. It then engages with the main fixing thread on the opposing component.
  3. The unthreaded portion of the stud resides in the hole bore or cavity. When unscrewed from the fixing bore, the thread in the cover effectively prevents the screw from falling out.

These stainless steel captive screws meet the requirements of the current European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, enhancing safety and operational efficiency. Notable options include:

  • GN 912.2: Dimensions based on DIN 912, available in M3 and larger sizes.
  • GN 7984.2: Offers the same captive functionality but with a reduced head height.
  • GN 7045.2: The ideal choice if a pan head with a Phillips drive is required for a captive application.

4. Unique Adjustments: Eccentric Head Screws

For applications requiring lateral pressure or adjustment, the GN 418.3 special screw offers an ingenious solution. Its head is eccentrically aligned with the thread axis.

  • Turning the screw left or right exerts lateral pressure.
  • The screw thread in this design supports the screw laterally rather than producing axial clamping force. A mark on the screw head indicates the eccentric element’s position, facilitating precise adjustments. This makes it perfect for innovative fixture designs where lateral tension is desired.
